There’s something special about a trip to the seaside, and Whitby has everything you could want for a family day out—fresh air, beautiful views, and a touch of history. Last weekend, we packed up the car and headed to this charming Yorkshire coastal town, and it didn’t disappoint.
Here’s how our day unfolded, from exploring the harbor to enjoying fish and chips by the sea.
Starting the Day with a Scenic Drive
The drive to Whitby is a treat in itself, especially as you approach the town. Winding roads take you through the stunning North York Moors, with rolling hills and fields stretching for miles. The kids loved spotting sheep along the way, and there were plenty of oohs and ahhs when the view of the harbor finally came into sight.
We arrived mid-morning, parked in one of the car parks near the town center, and set off on foot to explore.
Exploring Whitby Harbor
Our first stop was the harbor, where the kids immediately gravitated toward the boats. From fishing vessels to colorful little rowboats, there was plenty to see. We walked along the quayside, pausing to watch seagulls swoop overhead and fishermen unloading their catch.
The atmosphere was lively, with street performers and stalls selling everything from souvenirs to fresh seafood. The kids insisted on picking out little keyrings shaped like anchors, their first treasures of the day.
Climbing the Famous 199 Steps
No trip to Whitby is complete without tackling the 199 Steps up to St. Mary’s Church and the iconic Whitby Abbey. The kids counted every single step on the way up (with a few breaks for dramatic “I can’t go on!” moments).
Once at the top, the views were breathtaking. You can see the whole town spread out below, with its winding streets and red-roofed houses leading down to the harbor. The kids were fascinated by the ruins of the Abbey, which have a mysterious charm that’s impossible to ignore. We explored the grounds and tried to imagine what life was like when it was first built.
A Fish and Chip Feast
After all that climbing, we were ready for lunch. And where better to eat fish and chips than in Whitby? We chose one of the many local chippies (you can’t really go wrong—they’re all excellent) and found a bench overlooking the sea.
There’s something unbeatable about eating crispy fish and fluffy chips while feeling the salty breeze on your face. The kids were in heaven, though we had to keep a close eye on the seagulls, who were a bit too interested in our lunch!
Beach Time and Fossil Hunting
After lunch, we headed down to the beach. The tide was out, leaving plenty of room for the kids to run around and search for treasures. They found shells, smooth pebbles, and even a tiny piece of sea glass, which they declared their most valuable find.
Whitby is known for its fossils, so we spent some time looking for interesting rocks along the shore. While we didn’t find anything spectacular, the kids loved imagining they might uncover a dinosaur bone or ancient seashell.
Ice Cream and a Stroll Through the Town
Of course, no seaside day is complete without ice cream. We treated ourselves to big, colorful cones from a stall near the harbor and took a leisurely stroll through the town.
Whitby’s cobbled streets are full of charm, with quirky shops selling everything from handmade jewelry to Dracula-themed souvenirs (a nod to Whitby’s connection to Bram Stoker’s famous novel). The kids were fascinated by the Gothic vibe and insisted we peek into a few of the spookier shops.
Finishing the Day with a Lighthouse Walk
Before heading home, we walked along the West Pier, taking in the views of the North Sea and the rugged coastline. The kids loved getting close to the lighthouse and watching the waves crash against the rocks below. It was the perfect way to end the day—a moment of calm before the drive back.
Tips for a Family Day Out in Whitby
- Arrive Early: Whitby is a popular spot, especially on sunny weekends. Arriving early means easier parking and fewer crowds.
- Wear Comfy Shoes: There’s a lot of walking (and those 199 Steps), so comfortable footwear is a must.
- Pack for the Weather: Even in summer, the seaside can be windy and chilly, so bring layers just in case.
- Keep an Eye on the Tides: Check tide times if you plan to explore the beach or go fossil hunting.
- Save Room for Dessert: Whitby is famous for its sweet treats, from ice cream to traditional fudge.
Why We Love Whitby
Whitby has a little bit of everything—history, adventure, great food, and stunning scenery. It’s the kind of place where you can do as much or as little as you like, and the kids are already asking when we can go back.
If you’re looking for a family-friendly day out by the sea, I can’t recommend Whitby enough. Just watch out for those cheeky seagulls—they’re not above pinching a chip or two!
